Care for the older foot

Older feet benefit from sympathetic, gentle podiatry care (pod = foot in Greek). The bones and soft tissue structures change with time, and long-term medical conditions can cause the feet to become vulnerable to high pressure and trauma.

I have over 30 years experience as a podiatrist.  I have a particular expertise and interest in the vulnerable foot.

Nail Treatments

Gentle nail cutting of 'normal', thickened , bruised and fungal infected nails is offered.  Advice for treatment of fungal infected nails is given.  If only limited areas of nail are affected eradication is possible with topical paints.

Nail surgery - partial and total nail avulsions are offered for nails that are ingrowing (it has entered the skin causing pain and infection), for involuted nails that are staple shaped, deformed nails that are difficult to cut and cosmetically unpleasing.

Reduction of corns and calluses

These build up as a result of high pressure and shearing forces. They are the skin's way of protecting itself from extrmal (and potentially damaging) forces.  A corn is a very specific and often tiny area of hard skin resulting from specific high pressure.  Corns and calluses can occur anywhere on the foot and even under nails.  Sharp (scalpel) reduction is used to relieve the symptoms.  They will return if the cause is not addressed.

Bespoke Devices
& Insoles

Chairside and laboratory manufactured bespoke orthoses (insoles/inserts) and removable toe devices are employed to address the cause of corns, calluses and some nail problems by redistributing pressure or shearing (rubbing) away from the site under or over the foot or at the toes.

Footwear Advice

Footwear advice (shoes, slippers and boots, etc) is always given as certain styles impact significantly on how the feet (and lower limbs) work and on the wearability and efficacy of podiatric treatments such as orthoses (insoles).
